Closing as requested. Also, Ubuntu 7.04 development branch now includes
the DRM module patch I mentioned (in upstream kernel 2.6.20-rc2), in
case it was causing the problem.

nested Xgl crash, ATI r300
I say close this bug report. I am now succesfully using compiz without
any crashes, and do not have any interest in running it nested, as that
was only for testing purposes.

Do you still have the problem? Not sure about all that nested stuff, but
a problem with the drmRadeonCmdBuffer error should now be fixed
(yesterday) in MESA/DRM git repository,
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=mesa/drm.git;a=summary - if you feel
like experimenting.
** Changed in: xserver-xgl
You need to git clone the repository, go to linux-core directory, then
make, and then copy/overwrite drm.ko and radeon.ko under /lib/modules.
Finally, depmod -a and a reboot or gdm shutdown plus rmmod drm, rmmod
radeon, modprobe radeon should get the new DRM driver into use.
The problem affected
Full session (rather then nested) Xgl now is working for me with the
free ati driver, using the following script from GDM ...
#!/bin/bash
# Start up Xgl, compiz, and GNOME
# Run Xgl server on :1, on top of normal X
Xgl :1 -fullscreen -ac -accel xv -accel glx:pbuffer
# Tell subsequent X programs
