I too am having this problem with Karmic with the latest updates
installed as of March 10th 2010. Will not mount cd's or dvd's
Along with the cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
messages in the logs, I get this when trying to manually mount:
desktop:~$ sudo mount /dev/scd0
I have probably the same error. I am unable to burn at any free DVD-R/RW on KK
Alpha 3 using brasero or gnomebaker.
Always askes me for free medium to burn on, although I have it in cd-rom drive.
Weird..
+ I am unable to open drive until reboot/suspend machine. Once works only
eject, but then
[ 2429.321843] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
DVD found, but brasero still can't find any :(

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Bugs,
Here is the error message I get with cdrecord.
$ sudo cdrecord brasero.iso dev=/dev/scd0
wodim: No write mode specified.
wodim: Asuming -tao mode.
wodim: Future versions of wodim may have different drive dependent defaults.
Device type: Removable CD-ROM
Version: 5
Response Format: 2
Is the real problem here that you're unable to use the usual methods to burn a
disk ?
brasero informs me it doesn't see any disks it can write to but i just ran
cdrecord /home/kit/Desktop/karmic-desktop-amd64.iso /dev/sr0 from a console
which appears to have succeeded.
if this is what the op
because an empty cd wouldn't have any filesystem to mount in the first
place. not really a bug tho.

I can confirm this bug. I see the following messages too:
[ 236.294238] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
[ 236.334874] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE

[ 236.334883] sr
I have the exact same problem. If you put in a blank cd-r, cd-rw,
dvd±r, or dvd±rw you get this in your dmesg.
