If it's by design, why is it confined to Gnome? KDE and Xfce supposedly
do what one would expect, and that is open where they were initiated. I
can't understand why it should be by design to have the window suddenly
open up on you when you're moving through the viewports looking at other
tasks...
This is by design. When the application finally starts and the window is
mapped it is placed on the screen and viewport where your mouse cursor
is.
