Resolved this by editing /etc/network/interfaces back to default.
Somehow something added auto ppp0 entries to the file. Simple fix for my
issue, don't know about the original reporter.

Ouch. This is still happening to me with the latest update to 2.6.31-3

I set VERBOSE=yes in /etc/init.d/networking if boot with 2.6.31-2 kernel
stopped and write to terminal: runlevel: no such file or directory. I can

This is not a a duplicate bug, I also get same results. 2.6.28 boot and
2.6.31 hangs at configuring network interfaces.

Not sure how this is a duplicate. I am experiencing the same symptoms
reported here when attempting to boot into 2.6.31-2. Boot hangs
indefinitely at "Configuring network interfaces". However, unlike bug
