It appears as if part of the system thinks the screen is only 1680x1050
big.

I'm not sure. Today I booted, logged in and tehre it was again.
Steps:
this is what I did today:
- dock the laptop
- boot Windows XP
- restart
- boot Ubuntu
- on the login screen (which appears in mirrored mode, same image on both
monitors) I enter user/pass

Another weird thing.
For some reason I rebooted, and after that the screen was in mirror mode
again. I changed it to two screens and see the wonder, now the above problem is
not present.
I guess a reboot cures everything... (doh, I said that for the second
time this week)
