I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 with a clean installation. I tried
OpenMovieEditor again. This time it opens, but it is still VERY, VERY
slow in playing back a MPG file. It takes a long before it starts to
play, and when it does, it plays slowly in shutter effect. At least
this time it does not freeze u

Sorry I took so long for a reply. I did not have time these past few months to
play around with movie editing.
I converted from Kubuntu 9.04 (KDE) to Ubuntu 9.04 (Gnome) in the meanwhile -
duel boot. I installed Open Movie Editor again, but still it did not want to
open. I followed your suggesti

I removed Open Movie Editor after I struggled with it, so I had to
install it again. But this time it does not open at all. I clicked on
the icon, the application appeared on the task bar, but no application
window opens. After a few seconds it disappear from the task bar also.
