Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: memtest86+

xubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386 installed on Windows XP partition . CDR discs that
pose no problem in Windows, and that start normally in
DOS mode or Linux mode ( Paragon Drive Backup ) when cold booting from the
DVD-Rom drive, do not react normally when I am in Xubuntu and load a CDR in one
of my two drives . The problem clearly is Linux driver problem or other Linux
software problem .
There is a minutes long spinning of the drive, then a window that says the
drive could not be locked on, but eventually the contents of the CDR become
visible . Not very practical, disturbing and nerve wrecking .
