I had to install by hand menu-xdg
I can understand that in Ubuntu the menu is meant to be as simple as possible,
but it should be as well simple to edit it.

zolly and Holger Bauer were and still are RIGHT.
Debian menu should be available with just a click.
It is absurd to have the debian menu visible as an option with a check
box and not activate it when it is checked by the user. And to make
things worse, when it is checked there is absolutely NO in
in karmic link described in #3 exists, but debian menu cannot be
activated

I agree with zolly. Please at least install it, so that it can be used by a
simple click in alacarte.
I also had to create a link from /var/lib/menu-xdg/menus/debian-menu.menu to
/etc/xdg/menus so I could activate it in alacarte.
