the issue was not only about printing, but about rendering (displaying) as well.
actually, the document renders fine in evince now (latest Karmic), so I'm
closing this as fix released

My apologies... My new HP printer will not print anything at all if the
ink cartridge is below a certain point, so my pages were coming out
blank, instead of spotty or greying out. Anyhow, I'm not used to it, and
I thought Acrobat was to blame. Not so. Once again, my apologies.

So, now it's happening in Adobe Acrobat 9.1.3 on Ubuntu as well... only
worse, I think. Evince at least was print frames and bars; I'm getting
blank sheets of paper from Acrobat as of today, or at least some time
this week. As I recall there was a poppler update just a day or two ago.

Confirmed, here's some of the console messages:
Error: Missing or invalid Encoding entry in Type 0 font

I don't know if this is meaningful or not, but the nautilus image
preview of the PDF in question has no text visible either. That may or
may not be a clue.
