Sorry to report:
* The Xine back-end started working again.
* Rebooted and tested again: it's working.
As with others who have reported this issue I have no idea why it's
working again - no idea what I did to improve the situation.
(On the plus side the Audigy card has a Bass/Treble adjustment b
