It seems that with Ubuntu 9.10 i386 this issue has been solved.

For me, sound plays perfectly for a while and then eventually sound
ceases.
I don't know how to reproduce this, but I have experienced it several
times. I have repeat enabled, and I'll leave my computer and come back
to see video playing without sound. That's the best I can describe this
at this p
By the way, I using a Dell Studio 17 (S17-162B).
