This issue exists in ubiquity in Natty (dev. branch)
I tested natty-desktop-amd64+mac.iso CD (from 2011-03-23).
I entered a username with an underscore, which was not flagged as
problematic until I tried to advance to the next screen. The error
dialog reappears as soon as it's dismissed, leaving

Happened to me today installing Ubuntu 9.10. Had to hit the power
button. Wasn't using any of the advanced partition options, just had an
underscore in my name.
