According to the comment on the upstream bug, this is now fixed, so
closing. I'll also be removing the patched package from the PPA.

** Description changed:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
The xserver crashes when enabling visual effects.
To reproduce:
1. Log into GDM
2. System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects>Normal
Detecting driver dialog shows, "Unable to enable effects" dialog shows a slit
I've packaged the two patches mentioned on the upstream bug to this PPA:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/orange
Let me know whether or not that solves the issue. If it does, I can
pull it into karmic proper for more thorough testing.

I forwarded this bug upstream to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23104 - I'd encourage you
to subscribe to that.
They indicate that this is probably fixed by a couple xserver commits.
I'm going to give a shot to seeing if it'd be hard to backport those to
our 1.6.3 xserver, otherwise
