Sebastien, according to the NotifyOSD wiki merging requires the
x-canonical-append hint.
I'm not sure, but this looks like something specific to Ubuntu.

If notifications coming from Empathy get replaced and not appended,
Empathy is obviously doing something wrong. Append works as always in
notify-osd, which the libnotify-plugin for Pidgin clearly demonstrates.
Self-contained and stand-alone examples for Append can be found in
notify-osd's example
Thanks for your bug report and helping to make ubuntu a better place.
This appears to be a problem with notify-osd over empathy. I have
switched the packages involved.
