fixed indeed in Lucid Lynx 10.04 i386!
It installs the grub2 bootloader to the selected partition without killing the
current bootloader/in the 'mbr' on the first disk.

Another Update!

I will try a manually install to external usb disk and see if it still breaks
the mbr of the internal disk... keep ya updated!
I did it and just finished 2 test installs on a external memory-stick.
One affected the mbr on my internal /dev/sda the other install did

I did and when using the automatic partition option use entire
I fixed my mbr this time by restoring the whole 512 bytes, because ubuntu
installed it to the mbr on /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdf...

Familiar bug:
It is a serious Windows XP like bug, because the Windows XP install always
writes itself or overwrites the mbr of the first harddisk even

During ubuntu install I manually reformated the fat32 filesystems to the
needed ubuntu filesystems. This might also screw the mbr, I will test later
today.
By re-installing ubuntu 9.10 on /dev/sda and reformating the filesystem
and even disabling grub/mbr install in the
Confirmed for the kubuntu 9.10 release ISO.
I set ubiquity to install grub on /dev/sda6, as i had it already on my
MBR(regular ubuntu 9.10 install). However, the mbr was still
overwritten.
I fixed it by booting my regular ubuntu and did a grub-install. But an
installer should do as it's told. I

when i ask to install the bootloader to /dev/sda6 it still puts it on
/dev/sda

i did an update with update manager. grub-pc popped up a dialog asking
which devices to keep grub up to date on, the only option was /dev/sda.
now it has installed grub2 on to the MBR so i can't chainload my other
OSs again.
how can i keep karmic's grub off the MBR?

booting to a jaunty live cd i can do,
sudo grub
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
to restore grub on MBR, then i can chainload karmics grub on sda6, and
it boots.
