Same thing here with a Feisty CD on an Athlon 1700+ desktop. I checked the CD
for errors and performed a memtest - all ok.
Basically the issue is that the CD drive keeps spinning forever, even without
launching the installer, and system responsivity gets worse over time, even
doing nothing.

Can you still reproduce this (perhaps try Feisty, if you can still
reproduce it with Dapper)? It sounds like a kernel bug or a bad CD - at
any rate, probably not an installer bug as such.
