ufraw doesn't support Canon 500D on Karmic Koala (although software that
use dcraw such as RawTherapee doesn't have an issue). There is an
updated version of ufraw in a PPA that does support 500D available here

This patch updates dcraw.cc and dcraw.h to the latest version. This will
fix the problem. A better fix will be to update the ufraw package to the
current UFRaw cvs code base which fixes other problems as well.

Okay.
The latest ufraw has support for 450D but not 500D.
The latest dcraw has support for 500D, but ufraw hasn't taken in those changes
yet.
I managed to realize that ufraw doesn't use the dcraw binary (but
duplicates dcraw code), download the sources, find the affected code,
patch it, build it
I have the problem as well (9.04).
Canon EOS 500D RAW images come out purple.
