Yes, but the only pratical point of adding gstreamer is adding support
for H.264, since all the free formats are already natively supported
(while other formats aren't interesting in firefox). Other softwares
need gstreamer because is the only supported backend also for the free
formats.

5 beta doesn't work is no longer correct. Trunk builds of Firefox
support the WebM format which is supported by YouTube. They are in the
process of transcoding their videos to YouTube. You should be able to
play many YouTube

The problem is that Firefox-3.5 (and 3.6) contains code specific to the
Ogg and Wav file formats and specific codecs. Though the original
video tag support included generic gstreamer support, MozCorp for some
reason rewrote that to exclude the use of system-provided codecs. See,
