I just realized - there's probably no point in installing Jaunty to more
HDD's from the same CD that didn't produce wvdial in the first place, is
there?

The installation was clean. I've heard of people having troubles after
upgrading, and I'm on freakin dial-up at home, so in the habit of going some
place with the laptop where there's broadband and downloading the entire .iso.
Then it's back home to burn the CD and install manua

wvdial should be automatically be in jaunty. It is up and working on my
laptop. You don't really need gnome-ppp ( I don't actually have it
installed).
Next time it happens, try and see if you have wvdial installed by typing
in the terminal:
sudo apt-get in
