Public bug reported:

Hello, thanks for reading this!

Here is what I observed :
    * Plugging jack headphones does not mute the laptop speakers. (I can
confirm this for Hardy Heron, Intrepid Ibex and Jaunty Jackalope releases.)

    * It is not possible to manually mute speakers when headphones are plugged
since both of them are simultaneously controlled by Volume Control 'Front',
'Headphones' and 'PCM' tracks.
    * Volume Control 'Front Mic' and 'Front Mic Boost' tracks control both
laptop and headset microphone.
(Sure for Jaunty, I do not know for any other release. I will post a
comment as soon as I will know.)

Following bug reports may be related, being not sure I preferred not to modify
them.

packages to related topics, yet I need some mentoring to make the triage
decisions. Do not hesitate to contact me if you are ready to give it,

Regards.
