No, radeonhd does not need ati/radeon. But the default setup (which will
use radeon) needs the ati wrapper package to be installed. That's
probably why -test2 fails.
-test3 shows that radeon works fine. But if this is with radeonhd
installed, I would consider it a bug that radeonhd is not picked
Hi,
now following is installed to test:
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.99+git20090629.f39cafc5-0ubuntu6
xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.99+git20090629.f39cafc5-0ubuntu6
xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd 1.2.5-1
and no xorg.conf
Result: the xserver works and I have a desktop

vesa is a driver that works for (almost) all cards, and has no 2D or
3D acceleration so it is slow, and can not use high screen resolutions.
It is used as a fallback.
You have uninstalled the ati and radeon drivers. This is not a case
we are interested in, since these drivers are supposed to be

Hi,
the upper 4 attachments are following produced:
1. only radeonhd is installed (no radeon, no fglrx)
2. big desktop is configured in the upper xorg.conf, which is completely
written by me
3. start test
a. boot into command line, rename xorg.conf = then there is no
xorg.conf anymore
b.
Hi,
I'm not sure what vesa means (grafik mode without 2D support?). The system
still stayed in the text mode and ended into the text login.
bye

I thought radeonhd would be preferred if it is installed. On a standard
installation it is not installed so radeon will be used. If none of them
are installed, vesa is used. (As long as the card is supported by all
the drivers, of course.)

Hi forscher,
Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've
made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Ubuntu developers have indicated that they use the radeon driver as the
default or 'preferred' for ATI Radeon GPU's. If you want to use the
radeonhd driver, you need to at least specify it as the the 'driver' in
the 'device' section.
The real question: If you only have radeonhd installed and no
