I re-installed Karmic Alpha 4 with updates after formatting to FAT32,
then to ext4 and Grub 2. I haven't had any reoccurrence of the bug. All
programs previously installed were restored from my-packages.
There is still no splash on boot or shutdown - just a black screen until
login. As the bug
Disabling the nvidia driver leaves me with a 640x480 resolution. There
needs to be a fix in the nvidia driver. Perhaps the bug is restricted to
certain makes and models of monitors. I have had on and off issues since
Hardy with my Acer AL1715.

These are the last lines before the boot stops. I didn't see any other
boot failures other than virtual box, which has always shown as 'fail'

To enable a temporary work-around, disable the nvidia driver as follows:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
comment out the line that reads something like
driver = nvidia
