Favorites remind me of bookmarks in Firefox which use a star in the
awesome bar.

To me, a star means creating something new, whereas "+" means adding
something or perhaps increasing some value. Most icon sets I can think
of use a star, although I honestly cannot remember what OSX uses, maybe
this is where the idea came from?
