I no longer had hours. I hooked up a parallel cable and managed to print what
I needed to print in color. I won't buy another USB printer, ever.

seasoned_geek, the USB stuff IS sorted out. Please update your system.
The package cups 1.4.0-3 contains both the fixes for the discovery of

I've given up. My printer happened to have a parallel port, so I dug out an
old cable. Can't wait for this USB stuff to get sorted out.

[Karmic] some recent update
I can confirm this, using:
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2305
Parallel Port
connected to a HP LaserJet 6L
Attempting to print a test page from the print admin gui results in a
permanent "processing" message and no action.
The cups error log is empty.
