Have the same problem, with Pidgin 1:2.10.3-0ubuntu1.3 on Ubuntu 12.04.
I think a workaround is to wait for the list to be completely downloaded
and then sort. When trying to sort while downloading, Pidgin freezes.

Actually, one comment - there is a 'stop' button to interrupt it getting
the chat list, but again that took quite a while to appear/do anything.

I'm confirming this because I've just seen the same thing myself; pidgin
1:2.6.2-1ubuntu5
To be more specific, lets say you are on a big irc network and you open the
channel window - in my case
by doing a /list patternit came up and was populating and I clicked on the
name to get it to sort;
