No it did not help as I was with kubuntu. However the bug was precisely
this one. And the analoguous of what was explained by Niels Kristian
Bech Jensen did the job.
This bug does not exist in the release candidate of October 19th 2006.
But others
Did the information on the previous comment help solve this problem?
Does it still exist on Edgy final?

I think this could be a duplicate of bug #23445. Please try this
workaround:
* boot using Linux single so gdm is not started
* do not use tab on the console
* disable sound in gdm by setting
SoundProgram=/bin/true
SoundOnLogin=false
In /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
