As far as design goes, it seems there are two problems. In manual mode,
I can click on the connection to connect but I can't click on it to
disconnect. The radio button

Ok, now I don't think this is a bug, just me not using the applet
properly. It was my habit to right-click and enable/disable networking
to connect/disconnect. I see now there is a difference between
enabling/disabling networking and actually connecting/disconnecting from
a particular network. I
is this a system connection (available to all users?) ... whats the name
of that connection? Maybe its an oddity of the auto eth0 connection? Try
to create a new connection and see if it works better.
