Ok thank you.. it does not crash now... but it behaves irrationally. Screen
is not updated on resize etc. Compositing perhaps... intel driver.

Yes, there are unfortunately a number of issues between glchess and the
video card. Hopefully you will see an improvement when you upgrade to
9.10 (where this specific issue has already been fixed). Thanks for
your bug report.
