That was the case, yes... have since moved onto Edgy and everything's
working fine, so can't give you any further information any more Im
afraid.

Can you please clarify... your airport extreme card works properly if
you configure it manually (using iwconfig, etc.), but the network
monitor applet doesn't think it's a wireless interface?
