I had the same problem on Kubuntu Karmic (up to date). I have installed
gnome-audio and now it works.

Because I removed gnome-media back. And same thing started happening
again.
When I try to call someone, my conversation window appears for a second,
and disappear

"gconftool-2 --get /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc" gives this:
pulsesrc
I tried on the command line gstreamer-properties it didn't work, and
told me that I should install gnome-media. I installed it and rerun
gstreamer-properties. Default Input Plugin shows PulseAudio Sound
Server.

"gconftool-2 --get /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc"
Could you try to change your default input audio to use Pulseaudio
(using gstreamer-properties) ?
