For now I don't use swap so hibernation is impossible. Suspend works fine,
though.

After installation of karmic final, works fine. Not sure if it was a
previous configuration issue (from jaunty), but i can no longer
duplicate.

I use 64-bit Karmic on Dell E6500; I tried suspend several times and it
worked in all of cases.
Could You try to provide steps to reproduce it? Otherwise I doubt
anybody will be able to help...

I downgraded to a 2.6.30 kernel and it works fine. As soon as i put a
2.6.31 kernel it always hangs attempting to suspend. Now it is guaranteed
hang. I am just running 2.6.30 for now.

Strange... I use fully updated 64-bit Karmic, I have enabled compiz and
it seems ok.
Have You tried disabling compiz? Does it work then?
