Can you also follow the instructions in the "CUPS error_log" section in

and then start CUPS? Can you attach the error_log when CUPS reaches the
assertion failure?

Can you check whether your /var/log/syslog or /var/log/cups/error_log
contains any message about the assertion failure?
Can you try to start CUPS manually with the shell command
sudo /etc/init.d/cups start
Do you get any messages on the screen?
