Lucid with current updates shows the same behavior as karmic on my
5810TZ. When I use the brightness buttons on the arrow keys, the
brightness shifts with the first tap of a key and then the system
freezes completely.

I've got stock kernel 2.6.32.3 and Debian (not Ubuntu), so all this
FWIW.
On my 5810TZ, xrandr --prop does not show BACKLIGHT_CONTROL. Backlight
keys do not work, but when booting *without* nomodeset (some posts on
the Internets suggest that nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor fixes this,
but for me
executorvs, how do you update the BIOS running Ubuntu as a single OS? Do
you have a dual boot?

They put out a patch for the bios update I mentioned. it makes no
difference.

so the brightness keys seem to work with the latest bios update. the
catch, which I would like to see if anyone else encounters, is that when
you use them the touchpad stops working. can anyone else confirm this?

xev does in fact register the correct event. This is a gnome-settings-
manager or gnome-power-manager issue.

There has been a driver update, -intel is now 2.9.0-based. Could you
update packages, and see if there's any difference? That update fixed
backlight controls for me - works OOTB as expected...

Thank you for your bug report. gnome-settings-daemon doesn't have
anything to do with brightness keys though, so I'm reassigning to gnome-
power-manager.
Please kill the currently running instance of gnome-power-manager, run
the following, press your brightness keys a few times and then attach
this is the output of gnome-power-manager --debug. only contains
gdk_window_foo errors.

running xrandr --prop in console, and post the items listed below

Same problem here (almost), see bug #428054. This seems to affect pretty
many Intel users... Anyone with laptop powered by modern Intel GPU with
working backlight?
