Ya! thanks Travis this really helped out. I now get the border around
the window again...Good Work!! I wonder how it got uninstalled in
the first place, I noticed it started to happen after the last update.

Ok, now we get back to first information you gave me, I should have
noticed this early. Half of compiz is currently uninstalled. Install the
compiz package and everything should start working again.

I see the problem, your compiz configuration has gotten corrupted
somehow. Your plugins list is completely empty. Run the following
command then try to start compiz again:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz
That will set your compiz settings back to the defaults and it should all work

This is an issue with compiz I presume. I had similar trouble with a
recent update, which I worked around by switching back to metacity for
the interim.
