Just filed a bug yesterday (sadly, I did not find /this/ bug until
today) that is a dup of this one - bug 121294). I have a small
screencast showing the problem with an OTF font that I recently acquired
myself. It's a shame, because the font is really good looking, IMHO.

It's possible to do a lossless conversion to Type1, where the glyph
quality remains unaffected, but Type 1 font can only handle 256 glyph in
contrast to the 65535 glyphs OpenType can handle.

Just wanted to confirm this for Fontin at least. It appears to be an
upstream issue with any OpenType fonts with the .otf extension (which
should mean they have PostScript outlines).

Apparently, you can do a somewhat lossy conversion
Indeed, it seems to be an upstream issue. Anyway the lossy conversion is
total crap.
So that's not an option.
