With the information others provided I and a bit of searching I have another
work-around. I have rebuilt the ubuntu stock Karmic kernel with one config
change, setting:
CONFIG_MMC_UNSAFE_RESUME=y
My acer aspire one now suspend and resume with no problems (although
bluetooth doesn't get suspended
I've confirmed the source of the error. The SDHC I always have in the
left reader. If I remove or unmount it, suspend works like a charm.
I didn't try hibernate, cause I don't have swap for all my RAM (1 GB).

I'm not yet sure in which conditions this error happens. This is the
second time within a week that it's happened to me. I have although
suspended succesfully many time before the crash. I'll report back when
it crashes the next time.

The suspend function only worked after alpha 5 fresh install. After a
few upgrades, it doesn't work anymore.

Upgraded to lastest packages asof 5-Oct-2009 and bug still remains.
First suspend works fine, subsequent suspend locks with sysrq key having
no effect.
