Matthew,
I hadn't noticed you couldn't place a real button in that area. As an
alternative solution, would it be possible to have just the arrow button
there, instead of placing it inside a hardcoded graphic? Maybe give it a
mouseover highlight effect so you know it can be clicked?

Currently we are using a hard-coded graphic that looks like a Human
button, because GTK apparently does not yet allow buttons inside
treeview cells. (This is why you don't get the proper mousedown feedback
when clicking the button.)
