I tried to test it with a Hardy live-CD but hardy's X doesn't detect the
monitor correctly. I just get a black screen because the video signal is
out of range. I will test it with a Intrepid live-CD soon.

Looking at the screenshot this looks similar to bug 133192 (with the
same graphics card). Try setting the agpmode to 4 in xorg.conf as
described there and tell us if it works.

Johannes, it sounds like you're using Dapper or some other old distro,
so installing -ati 6.8.0 on that is probably not going to work.
You should probably try booting Hardy, and then install this deb there
if the issue still exists.
However, the fixes in the deb really only apply to bugs seen in
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.8.0-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
dpkg: considering removing xserver-xorg-driver-ati in favour of
xserver-xorg-video-ati ...
dpkg: no, cannot remove xserver-xorg-driver-ati (--auto-deconfigure will help):
xserver-xorg-driver-all depends on xserver-xo
I don't know if this will fix this specific issue, but I've backported a
bunch of high importance patches that upstream recommended, that fix
problems sort of like this one, so I think it would be worth the time to
test. Please try this .deb and report what you find:
