This bug does not occur when I boot from maverick live CD. Since I
upgraded my system since hardy, I consider a reinstall. Any ideas to how
to find the source of this bug?

I just upgraded my T60p to maverick and experience the same behaviour
with the open source ati driver from maverick repo:
Single Screen (1680x1050) works with compiz, fast as before.
If I plug in my secondary screen, set it to 1440x900 compiz keeps
running, desktop effects all still work, but are
Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting
with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However please feel free to
reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this
issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to
do some troubleshoot

I no longer have a lenovo t60 laptop to test this on so I can't
reproduce it. I'm not sure why I'd mark it as fixed release if I can't
reproduce it. I'm someone else with that kind of laptop could try.

X started crashing whenever I'd try to turn compiz on. It seems ok now
after the most recent kernel update. I'll be able to test it out again
