Same symptoms started to appear here at the same time (yesterday), but the hardware is different (Intel/Intel/laptop vs. ATI/nVidia/desktop) and I run X the normal way (via gdm). I see the bug sometimes when I use the "switch user" feature (no keyboard or mouse at gdm login screen). I had a look a
