The bug appears to have been resolved with the latest upgrades available
this morning. Music played at normal speed on rhythmbox in my
VirtualBox vm. I took it a step farther and installed pulseaudio again,
and everything was working as it should.

the issue is probably not a rhythmbox one but that's where you opened
the bug and I've no idea what is wrong neither I got the issue but maybe
upstream will have an idea about it though, did you try playing files
with totem or other softwares or out of vmware?

I don't know if I'm the only one who has experienced this issue, but
there are a number of postings in the Ubuntu development forum about
sound problems in 9.10 alpha. I'm curious why you think this belongs
with Gnome? Could the problem not be with another sound module, or even
with VirtualBox, s
Thank you for your bug report. The issue is an upstream one and it would
be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people
writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)
