This is not only gnome-control-setting that triggers this. Just running
xrandr gives the exact same behavior.

Just tried on another machine with intel but another chip and it didn't
hang.
lshw from that (working) machine is:

When starting a xterm session from GDM (not the entire GNOME desktop)
doesn't make xrandr trigg this bug.
