Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are
quite pleased with t
Ran into this problem on Ubuntu 9.10 w/ GeForce 9500 GT (DVI x2).
Workaround:
1. Shutdown computer.
2. Unplug second monitor from DVI on graphics card.
3. Boot up ubuntu (X will work on the single display).
4. Install latest restricted NVIDIA driver.
5. Shutdown computer.
6. Plug in second monitor

I am facing the same issue with Karmic alpha 4. If a single port is connected

I don't know if this is the same issue I had in Bug #69609 (was merged

will post the Xorg log when I boot to the live CD again.

nvidia card: hangs on start gdm if a second monitor on DVI-I is present
Using the final release of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, I've encountered the same
error with a Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT graphics card and 2 monitors
connected via DVI: the system freezes during startup of X server. If one
of the monitors was disconnected or connected via VGA, the system would
boot up normally.
i just tested again with the latest hardy daily image (08-04-09) and the
bug is still present.

i just tested the latest daily of hardy and ran into the described
problem. I am testing with AMD64 version and have a GeForce 7600GT with

nothing on the other on
Please try Hardy beta if this issues is fixed with it.

I believe my problem is related, I have the same symptoms.
The only way I am able to get into X is if I have only one monitor
plugged in (to the DVI port) and the VGA port left empty.
