I experienced a similar problem when updating from grub to grub2.
First, grub2 was chainloaded to grub legacy for testing. All was ok, Karmic and
Windows 7 were both detected so I decided to use:
sudo update-from-grub-legacy
At my great surprise, Windows 7 no longer appeared in the menu. Only

I think you misread the schedule, then. Beta *freeze* was on 24
September, but the beta release is scheduled for 1 October.
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ is always just daily builds,
and sometimes those happen to be identical to a milestone release but
you won't be able to tell reliably
I have been using the image "karmic-alternate-amd64.iso" which could be
found at: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ on the 25th of
September. Before that, I had Alpha 6 DVD, which caused a lot of trouble
to my wireless internet (NetworkManager applet crashed after update). So
