I haven't clue if it happens still. I'm running Linux Mint 17 now, so
while I can try this out, I'm not sure it will be quite relevant to
you any more. Maybe I can poke at this tonight.

Yet more info, this only seems to happen when I'm using the RadeonHD
driver on an R500 based card. The radeon driver seems to be working
better. It's probably a radeonHD bug, not an SMC bug.

Interestingly enough, simply using 'xrandr -s 1280x1024' is enough to
restore the display to the original size. Here's the output of 'xrandr'
after exit from SMC, but before re-size, and then the resize.
