Yes this is still an issue, using:
Linux 2.6.31-18-generic GNU/Linux
I will re-test with 2.3.32 kernel shortly.

Alexander, was there a significant driver change in Karmic (9.10)?
This seems to be a regression as signal strength reports fine in Jaunty (9.04)
