Looking through the log, several different things are core dumping
throughout the upgrade.
This could well be a sign of a memory problem; reboot your machine, hold
SHIFT to get to the boot loader menu, and choose the Memory test
option.
If that's all ok, this could be a problem elsewhere, e.g.

Looks like the shell running the pre-install script, or something run by
the pre-install script, core dumped. There was nothing printed in the
log, so it's hard to tell what's going on.
