Looks to be chipset-specific - doesn't happen with an MSI 'BM12' USB
adapter, which shows up under lsusb as:

- this only happens when an USB wireless keyboard/mouse receiver (Logitech
Cordless Desktop 660) is plugged in (could this have to do with the Bluetooth
dongle registering itself as a keyboard/mouse input device?
- it happens whether the laptop is docked or undocked
