Same issue here, but you can remove your xorg.conf and reboot using a
recovery mode. then you get back gdm but without fglrx.

SAme problem here with ubuntu 9.10 RC x64
But I cannot even gain access with Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/..
System is dead, I tried to remove fglrx with a rescue mode, this gives me a
terminal access, but cannot fix my system !!

I have the same problem with a sapphire HD2400 Pro 512Mb ATI Radeon graphics
card in unbuntu / gdm. I had set auto-login to a user before installing the
graphics card. Its the first AGP I could buy new at present.

Actually the problem is that kdebase-workspace-bin is not a required
package. you can install kdm and much of the rest of KDE without this
package and you get a blank screen.
install kdebase-workspace-bin and you're good.
