I'm affected too.
This still happens on the final Karmick on 2.6.31-14-generic
I've checked and the snd_hda_intel module is loaded,
but my device is recognized as Internal Audio Output.
This used to work on jaunty
aplay -l
List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel],
Please attach the output from sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/*

I'm sorry Daniel, it was a false alarm.
I've done some editng on my alsa-base.conf file to get sound to pass through
speakers on Jaunty with my vaio.
I've deleted it all , and sound works just fine, so I'm not conferming it
anymore

didn't see any relevant entry in the changelog for 2.6.31-14.46

Again, the first thing that we'll ask you to do is reproduce it using
the latest
Ok, now I'm using the latest kernel, still no internal sound without
forcing load-module in /etc/pulse/default.pa
